Mathews ponders second retirement

Derry Mathews Mathews beat his former nemesis Tseveenpurev in Prizefighter in 2010

Liverpool boxer Derry Mathews says he will retire for a second time if he is beaten by Stephen Jennings on Saturday.

Mathews, 27, came out of retirement in July 2010, and is in line for a European lightweight title fight.

"If you're beaten fighting for the British Masters title, where do you go?" Mathews told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"Where would you go if you're beaten by Stephen Jennings? I've got the European title fight next, so I've got to win this fight."

He added: "I've got a lot to lose. If I'm beaten, I'll have to get a nine-to-five job because I'll walk away from the game.

"But I'm fully focused, whether it's for a world title or English title, I just know I've got to win this fight."

Mathews was due to fight Gavin Rees, who holds the European lightweight title, earlier this month but injury forced the Welshman to stand down.

Jennings, 27, hopes all the talk of big title fights for his opponent will be a help him at the Greenbank Sports Centre at the weekend.

"He may be underestimating me, but the worst thing he can do is underestimate me," said Jennings.

"Because on the night I will win. I believe and everyone around me believes I'm good enough to go and beat Derry.

"Derry's had 33 fights and done well, but I'm on the up. I'm going up and not coming back down."

Belfast's Magee outpoints Barboza

Brian Magee (left) and Jaime Barboza Magee (left) now has 35 wins and four defeats from 40 fights

Northern Ireland's Brian Magee easily outpointed Jaime Barboza to capture the fringe interim WBA super-middleweight crown in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Magee dominated the little-known Barboza, a career light-middleweight, using his jab and body shots to control the action.

It was Magee's first fight since losing to IBF title-holder Lucian Bute in Montreal in March.

Magee, 36, could now land a second shot at a world title.

Bingham surges back to take title

Stuart Bingham Bingham beat Ronnie O'Sullivan in the opening round of the UK Championships in December

England's Stuart Bingham won the last four frames of the Australian Open final to snatch a dramatic 9-8 win over two-time world champion Mark Williams.

Bingham began the final session level at 4-4, but twice found himself three frames adrift at 4-7 and then 5-8.

Breaks of 70 and 76 pulled the 35-year-old from Essex back level with the match to be decided on the 17th.

Bingham finally pulled clear after a cagey exchange of safety shots to claim his first ranking event title.

His victory came after a superb start which featured a break of 139 in the opening frame en route to a 3-1 lead.

Williams responded by taking the next three with breaks of 85, 57 and 84.

Bingham edged the eighth 64-52 to pull himself back, but seemed to have run out of steam after the interval.

Williams looked to have the upper hand as he followed up a half-century break in the ninth by capitalising on a series of errors by Bingham in the 10th and building a frame-winning break of 71 in the 11th.

But Bingham clawed his way to the title with a tremendous rearguard action.

After pouncing on an error by Williams in the 12th and making the most of a fortunate snooker in the 14th, Bingham compiled a break of 70 to reduce the deficit to a single frame.

Another big break restored parity and, after a cruel deflection appeared to deprive Bingham within sight of the line, he finally sank a green to seal victory.

Midday Goodwood Midday streaks away to win the Nassau Stakes for the third time

Midday, ridden by Tom Queally, became the first filly to win the Nassau Stakes three times after powering to victory at Goodwood.

The favourite travelled strongly throughout the 10-furlong Group One and produced a tremendous finish to lead entering the final furlong.

Snow Fairy provided the main threat to Midday, but the six-time Group One winner was too strong.

In the other feature, Chubby Chandler's Hoof It won the Steward's Cup.

But the victory for Midday caps a fruitful week at Goodwood for trainer Sir Henry Cecil, who also trains Sussex Stakes winner Frankel.

"It's been a wonderful week. All being well she'll go for the Yorkshire Oaks," said Cecil.

"She's been unlucky not to win more than six Group one races. She's a marvellous horse."

Hoof It, trained by Mick Easterby and ridden by Kieren Fallon, held off the challenge of Tax Free and Mac's Power to win in impressive style despite carrying the top weight.

Carrying a 6lb penalty following success at York a week ago, the joint-favourite was forced to concede weight to each of his rivals.

But having been covered up in the middle of the pack early, Fallon guided the winner to a convincing victory.

"He's done nothing but improve. Mick walked the course this morning and he told me to go to the far side so it made my job easier," said Fallon.

"I think he will be a Group One horse," he added.

The winner is jointly-owned by golfer Lee Westwood and his agent Chandler, who was thrilled with the victory.

"We will see what's what and we would like to have a go at all sorts of races," said a beaming Chandler.

Sharapova into Stanford quarters

  • Maria Sharapova battles into the quarterfinals at the Stanford Classic
  • Russian second seed beats Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 2-6 6-4
  • Sharapova could face fellow former world No. 1 Serena Williams in the last eight
  • Marion Bartoli, Agnieszka Radwanska and Dominika Cibulkova all record wins

(CNN) -- Maria Sharapova battled into the quarterfinals of the Stanford Classic in California on Wednesday to set up a potential showdown with fellow former world No. 1 Serena Williams.

The Russian second seed beat Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 2-6 6-4 despite losing seven games in a row in the middle stages of the match.

Sharapova maintained the form that propelled her into the final at Wimbledon, where she lost to Czech Petra Kvitova, as she continued her bid for a first title at the U.S. hardcourt tournament.

The 24-year-old will meet 13-time major champion Williams if the American can negotiate her way past Russia's Maria Kirilenko Thursday.

France's Marion Bartoli, a winner here in 2009, secured her place in the last eight with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Canadian Rebecca Marino.

The Wimbledon quarterfinalist will next play either Polish qualifier Urszula Radwanska or Japan's Ayumi Morita.

The third seed told the WTA Tour web site: "I love this tournament. It's a great place for me to start playing again. I felt great today.

"I lost to Rebecca last year in Quebec, so it was good for me to take revenge today. I can still improve some parts of my game here and there, but overall I'm happy with the way I played."

Radwanska's older sister Agnieszka took three sets to edge past Chang Kai-Chen 6-4 3-6 6-0, and the fifth seed will next play either Australian No. 4 Sam Stosur or Germany's Wimbledon semifinalist Sabine Lisicki.

Dominika Cibulkova beat the top-100's youngest player, Christina McHale from the United States, 6-4 2-6 6-3.

"I wasn't playing my best today and it's not easy to win matches like that," the 22-year-old Slovakian said.

"From 2-3 in the third set I played more aggressively and was able to win. I was lucky to win, but to win when you're not playing well gives you even more confidence and can help when you go and play your next matches."

Cibulkova also paid tribute to her 19-year-old opponent McHale, saying: "Her first serve was working well and she surprised me by hitting some slower balls too -- she's a solid player.

"I was also a young player coming up and I know what it takes. You have to play many matches and believe you can beat anyone. You just have to go for it."

Khan targets bout with Mayweather

Britain's Amir Khan Amir Khan was not troubled by IBF veteran Zab Judah in Las Vegas

Britain's Amir Khan believes he will be ready to fight undefeated Floyd Mayweather "within the next 12 months".

The 24-year-old defeated Zab Judah in their light-welterweight unification fight in Las Vegas on Saturday.

And Khan said: "My aim is to move up the pound-for-pound rankings and to one day be pound-for-pound champion.

"The Mayweather fight is something I'm looking at for the future and it would be huge for me. It would drive me on."

The Bolton fighter added: "I've got the speed and the skills and with [trainer] Freddie Roach polishing me up a little more, it's a fight we can win."

A fierce shot to Judah's body was enough to earn Khan the IBF crown to go alongside the WBA title he has defended since 2009.

After the bout, Roach lavished praise on his fighter, describing Judah as by far the toughest opponent of Khan's short career.

"That was one of Amir's best performances. I'm thrilled because it shows he's paying attention to what I'm teaching him," said Roach.

"Amir's best quality is that he listens. He's the best listener I've ever had. I give him some instructions, he follows them to a T.

"He has a lot of trust in me and I have a lot of trust in him. It's a very solid relationship and it feels good that he trusts me that much.

"In my mind he can be the next Manny Pacquiao, there's no doubt about that.

"I do believe Amir's speed can trouble Mayweather but Mayweather is a very good boxer and is very slick.

"We'd love to take on the winner of his fight with Ortiz."

The Olympic silver medallist will now choose from a variety of potential next opponents before opting for Mayweather.

"I'll take a look at the short list," said Khan.

"I'm still a fight or two away from there yet. At 25 I'll fight at 147 pounds and see where we go from there.

"We just keep on collecting titles, that's what we want to do. I'm only 24 and there's a lot of improvement to come."

Earlier in the week, Mayweather signalled a desire to defend his titles in the UK, but of Khan said "there's nothing there we haven't seen before in boxing".

"I'd love to go over and put on a great show and a great fight for my number one fans," the former number one pound-for-pound fighter said.

"When I went over there 5,000 fans watched me train. It was truly marvellous. I'd like to fight at Wembley, so I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best."

Before moving up to the 147lbs division, Khan could possibly fight Mexican Erik Morales or WBC and WBO title-holder Tim Bradley.

Khan's management team has made its feelings clear that a fight with Bradley would be the preferable option but the 27-year-old is apparently reluctant to accept the bout.

"No one can say to Amir, 'You didn't fight Bradley'," said Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer.

"Bradley had his chance, he was given a 50-50 split of the UK TV money.

"Amir must be the undisputed 140lbs champion because if Bradley didn't want to fight before, he won't want to fight him after seeing him beat Judah."

Frampton secures Martinez contest

Carl Frampton Carl Frampton has had only 10 professional fights

Belfast fighter Carl Frampton will fight for the European super-bantamweight title against Spain's Kiko Martinez in Belfast on 10 September.

Unbeaten Frampton has landed the title shot despite having had only 10 professional fights.

The bout will be the chief support fight to Paul McCloskey's contest with Breidis Prescott at the Odyssey Arena.

Martinez's record includes a stunning first-round knockout of Bernard Dunne in August 2007.

The Spaniard is in his third stint as European champion.

Martinez knocked out Bernard Dunne in the first round of a European title fight in August 2007 but then lost the EBU belt when outpointed by Rendall Munroe the following March.

However, he regained the European belt in April when he knocked out Jason Booth in the 10th round in Madrid.

  • Sean O'Hair wins his first PGA Tour event in two years after claiming the Canadian Open
  • The American had previously missed the cut in 10 of his last 17 tournaments
  • O'Hair is now close to securing a spot in the season-ending FedEx Cup series
  • He beat compatriot Kris Blanks at the first hole of a playoff on Sunday

(CNN) -- American golfer Sean O'Hair was relieved after rescuing a poor 2011 season with his first PGA Tour title in over two years at the Canadian Open on Sunday.

The 29-year-old holed a bogey putt in the first hole of a playoff with compatriot Kris Blanks, whose effort in reply then lipped out of the cup.

O'Hair's victory, his fourth overall but first since May 2009, all but secured his place in the season-ending FedEx Cup series, lifting him up to 43rd in the standings.

It was a welcome return to form for the Texas native, who had missed the cut in 10 of his last 17 tournaments -- including this month's British Open and April's Masters at Augusta National.

O'Hair had started the week in uninspiring fashion and admitted he was "lost" after a poor performance in the Pro-Am event prior to the tournament.

I was lost on Wednesday ... to be sitting here, I just really appreciate this win
--Sean O'Hair

"Wednesday night was my worst point of the whole year," O'Hair told the PGA Tour's official website after securing the $936,000 winner's check.

"I was lost on Wednesday. To be sitting here, I just really appreciate this win. It is ironic that I'm sitting here after Wednesday and how I felt, and to be holding this trophy is unbelievable.

"I've been holding on so tight and trying to do it forcefully. Finally I just said 'You know what, it's time for me to just let go and whatever happens, happens.' "

The world number 60 carded a final round of 68 to overhaul the three-shot lead held by Bo Van Pelt heading into Sunday, as both he and Blanks -- who closed with 69 -- finished on four under par at the Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club.

Argentina's Andres Romero finished one stroke back in third place after a 70, with 2006 U.S. Open winner Geoff Ogilvy and Canadian Adam Hadwin tied for fourth.

Van Pelt, 36, led with nine holes to play but slumped to a 74 as he finished in a three-way tie for sixth alongside fellow Americans Scott Piercy and Woody Austin.

Two-time major winner John Daly shared ninth place on the leaderboard with fellow Americans Spencer Levin and amateur Patrick Cantlay, plus South Africa's 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.

World No. 1 Luke Donald was tied for 17th on two-over 282 along with South African veteran Ernie Els -- who carded a day's best round of 66 for his best finish since March.

Lomu criticises black England kit

Lomu critical of England all-black shirt

New Zealand legend Jonah Lomu has criticised England's decision to use an all-black away kit at the World Cup.

England's new change strip - the same colour as New Zealand's 127-year-old All Black jersey - will be worn in the game against Argentina on 10 September.

"For me, in some ways you are just disrespecting the legacy of past players," Lomu told BBC Sport.

"The All Blacks are synonymous with being in all black, and England the white shirt they have."

ENGLAND'S WORLD CUP FIXTURES

  • v Argentina: 10 September, Dunedin (0930 BST/2030 local)
  • v Georgia: 18 September, Dunedin (0700/1800)
  • v Romania: 24 September, Dunedin (0700/1800)
  • v Scotland: 1 October, Auckland (0830/2030)

Martin Johnson's side will revert to white for their other group games against Georgia, Romania and Scotland.

But should there be a further clash in later rounds, the black kit could return.

Hosts New Zealand have said they have no qualms with England wearing it, but Lomu is less comfortable.

"I will find it difficult to watch England in a different shirt," stated the 36-year-old, who scored 37 tries in 63 appearances for the All Blacks before retiring in 2007.

"I am one of those people who was brought up on the history of rugby, watching the great players of the past who have worn the England shirt and also the All Blacks'.

"I will find it pretty weird to look across the paddock and see them run out not wearing that famous white uniform."

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Jonah Lomu is the Rugby World Cup's all-time leading try scorer with 15 tries

The All Blacks have not won the World Cup since the inaugural tournament staged in New Zealand and Australia in 1987, but they will enter the 9 September-23 October tournament as favourites.

"It is theirs to lose," Lomu suggested. "It is on their home ground, they know the grounds better than any other team, they will have their fans there and the support around them from their own families.

"That is a huge advantage but at the same time, the players still have to do their job and do it well."

  • Swede cards a final round of five-over in strong winds in Stockholm
  • David Finch comes second with Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson tied for sixth
  • Japan's Ai Miyazato wins the Evian Masters in France

(CNN) -- Alexander Noren could afford to fire a five-over-par 77 in the final round of the Scandinavian Masters in Sweden and still win by seven shots in his native Stockholm.

Fierce winds dominated the final afternoon at the Bro Hof Slott course, with only England's Richard Finch, who finished second on eight-under, managing to break par.

Noren, who shot a course record 63 on Saturday to go into the final round 11 shots clear of the field, opened with a birdie but then slumped to make five bogeys and one double bogey.

But he survived the notorious 17th hole, which features an island green, to end on 15-under. Fellow Swede Niklas Lemke finished third on five-under with Australian Scott Hend and Spain's Pablo Martin a shot back.

Big-hitting Americans Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson both finished tied for sixth place on three-under.

I am so relieved. The only thing I thought of all day was the 17th
--Alexander Noren

Noren told the European Tour's web site: "I am so relieved. The only thing I thought of all day was the 17th. I said it doesn't matter how I play up to that, I just have to survive 17 and I did.

"I've never seen wind like this in Sweden. Every hole was super tough and even downwind it was hard to choose the clubs."

Noren admitted he was especially pleased to triumph in front of his home crowd: "It's even more amazing at home, everyone cheering you on and you don't really feel that somewhere else.

"It's amazing, you see some friendly faces in the crowd and it's unbelievable. I'm very happy."

Finch, who carded a one-under round of 69 to secure second place, said: "For seventeen holes it's the best round of golf I've ever played - absolutely delighted. It was a tough day.

"The course is tough enough as it is without however many mile an hour winds it is blowing."

Meanwhile, Japan's Ai Miyazato secured her second Evian Masters title in France after a two-under-par final round.

Miyazato, who won the 2009 installment of the the LPGA tournament, finished on 15-under, beating American Stacy Lewis by two shots.

She told the tournament's web site: This is my favorite tournament, so I'm really happy that could win this tournament again. Especially right now. In Japan we are having a really tough time, so I'm just really happy that I could do very some good news for Japan."

Button set for landmark 200th grand prix

  • Jenson Button is preparing for the 200th race of his Formula One career
  • The McLaren driver won his first grand prix in Hungary five years ago
  • His teammate Lewis Hamilton is looking to build on last weekend's triumph in Germany

(CNN) -- Jenson Button is relishing Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, as the McLaren driver returns to the site of his first-ever victory for the 200th race of his Formula One career.

The 31-year-old withdrew from last weekend's German Grand Prix, won by his teammate Lewis Hamilton, after 35 laps with hydraulics problems, but Button is hoping for better luck at the track where he tasted success as a Honda driver in 2006.

"It's always fun coming back to Hungary as this is the track at which I won my first grand prix," the 2009 drivers' champion told McLaren's web site. "After a premature end to my race at the Nurburgring, I'll be hoping for better luck at the Hungaroring.

"I can't believe I've already knocked up a double-ton of F1 starts because I don't feel a day older than when I made my debut back in 2000!"

Resurgent Hamilton triumphs in Germany

I don't feel a day older than when I made my debut back in 2000
--Jenson Button

Button made his first appearance in the elite division of motorsport at the Australian Grand Prix in 2000 with Williams, and has since gone on to represent Benetton, Renault, BAR, Honda, Brawn GP and now McLaren in an 11-year career.

The Briton has notched up 10 grand prix triumphs and secured his only world crown to date in 2009, while racing for Brawn.

Button is hopeful of a strong showing on Sunday and is taking encouragement from his third-place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix -- a circuit he feels presents a very similar challenge to the Hungaroring.

"The MP4-26 [McLaren's car] was very competitive in Monaco a couple of months ago and I hope it will be a similar situation this weekend because the Hungaroring has many of the same performance criteria.

Latest F1 standings after the German GP

"Cockpit temperatures regularly exceed 50 degrees and we're always pulling g-force in the car because there are so many corners. It's tough, but this is definitely a circuit when all the training pays dividends."

Hamilton is also a previous winner in Hungary having triumphed at the venue in 2007 and the 26-year-old is eager to build on his success at the Nurburgring last time out.

"I've always gone well in Hungary," said the 2008 world champion. "I like the circuit because it's old school. It has a very historic feel to it, with hills and bumps and cambers changes, and it has massive character."

Hamilton beat off fierce competition from Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber of Red Bull to earn a hard-fought win in Germany and he is anticipating another close contest.

"There wasn't much between McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull in Germany. It's going to be fascinating to see which team holds the advantage next weekend."

Despite Hamilton, Alonso and Webber finishing on the podium last time out, all three drivers trail reigning world champion and current standings leader Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel, 24, holds a 77-point lead over his colleague Webber at the top of the championship heading into the 11th race of the season.

Tourism remains strong despite Mexican violence

  • Mexico remains the No. 1 destination for Americans traveling abroad
  • Tourism officials have worked to diversify their tourism base
  • Initiatives have brought more tourists from Brazil, Russia and China
  • Some tourists have good experiences, some bad

(CNN) -- Mexico's international image may be taking hits because of the violence produced by drug cartels, but it hasn't hurt its tourism industry, officials say. International tourism to Mexico has increased 2.1% in the first five months of 2011 compared to 2010, and it remains the top destination for Americans traveling abroad.

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Commerce show that fewer Americans are traveling abroad, but a bigger percentage of those who do are going to Mexico. Mexico also reported double-digit increases in the percentage of visitors from Russia, Brazil and China, among others.

"The data doesn't lie," Mexico's deputy secretary for tourism, Ricardo Anaya, told CNN. "Tourists keep choosing Mexico."

The unrelenting battles between rival drug cartels and police and cartels have provided nearly unlimited fodder for those who write off Mexico as a dangerous destination.

The truth, Anaya said, is that the violence is limited to certain geographic areas that can be avoided by tourists.

The border area, for example, where much violence has been recorded, is 1,200 miles from the resort town of Cancun -- that's like avoiding travel to Houston because of problems in New York, he said.

According to surveys by Mexican tourism authorities, 98% of those who do visit Mexico say they will come back, and 99% recommend it to others.

Opinion: Why you should go to Mexico

Much of the growth has been fueled by new programs to incentivize tourists from emerging economies, such as the so-called BRIC countries -- Brazil, Russia, India and China.

For starters, Mexico began allowing holders of U.S. visas to enter Mexico, opening up the possibility of tourists to the United States extending their trips south of the border.

Also, Brazilians, Russians and Ukrainian visitors can gain travel permission to Mexico on the Internet, with no need for a visa.

Finally, for travelers from other countries, visas to Mexico in many cases can be obtained through a travel agent, erasing the need for trips to embassies.

In 2011 to date, Mexico has seen a 40.9% increase in Brazilian tourists, a 58.1% increase from Russia and 32.8% increase from China, according to Mexico's tourism ministry.

For U.S. travelers specifically, the Commerce Department's most recent data -- for 2009 -- shows that 31.7% of all U.S. international tourists go to Mexico. From 2002 to 2009, while U.S. tourism to Canada fell by more than 27%, tourism to Mexico from the U.S. increased by 5.1%. This happened even though the overall number of Americans traveling abroad decreased, from a peak of 64 million in 2007 to 61.4 million in 2009.

When Kendra Young, a high school teacher in Texas, told her friends that she and her husband's family were going to Cozumel for a yearly retreat, she was met with skepticism. Are you worried, they would ask? Are you still going?

"I think people see all of Mexico as one entity," she told CNN.

It was the third straight year that she traveled to the same resort, and security was not a concern for her. Young is pregnant, and she was more worried about food-borne or water-borne illness.

She was aware of several State Department travel warnings to Mexico's cartel hot spots, but she also knew that the area she was traveling to was not affected. Her group planned to stay on the resort, where they felt safest, but on the advice of resort staff they trusted from the previous trips, they ventured into the city without worries.

"Unfortunately, there are the headline-grabbing things -- the drugs, the violence -- but I don't think that's indicative of what's happening in the entire country," Young said.

Anaya pointed out that Americans are not unaware of the violence -- 80% of Americans who travel to Mexico go to six places, none of which have had travel alerts. The destinations are Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta/Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico City and Los Cabos, he said.

Some beach destinations, like Acapulco, have been the scene of some of the drug cartel bloodshed, but still managed to increase its tourism 3% in the first five months of 2011 compared to last year, thanks to national, rather than international, tourism.

But some pitfalls of tourism in Mexico persist.

Tucson, Arizona, resident Denise Hermosillo and a couple of friends made the six-hour trek last week from her home to Bahia de Kino in the state of Sonora, Mexico. This area is not under a travel warning, but is not among the top destinations for American tourists.

"I was scared out of my mind to go there," Hermosillo said. Friends of hers who are in the military are not allowed to cross the border and urged her not to do the same. But she wanted to go to the beach to write for a book she is working on, and Bahia de Kino is the closest one.

On the first day of her vacation, her group was pulled over by a police officer, who promptly asked for $100 in exchange to letting them go. In the moment she was frightened, all those stories about bloody ends in Mexico rushing to her mind. But she negotiated the bribe down to $20 and her group was allowed to continue on their journey.

"It was pretty pathetic, I thought. What are you going to do with 20 bucks?" she said. Still, she was unable to relax during her vacation.

Would she go back? She doesn't know.

Would she recommend Mexico to a friend? Maybe, but only if you are traveling with someone who could act as a guide.
