(CNN) -- World number seven Gael Monfils won two matches at the Legg Mason Classic Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Washington tournament.

Monfils, who is the top seed for the event, was unable to play on Wednesday due to rain, but the Frenchman seemed unaffected as he defeated Ryan Sweeting and Dimitry Tursonov in the second and third rounds respectively.

The 24-year-old beat American Sweeting 6-3 7-6 (7-3) in 85 minutes to set up his clash with the Russian 14th seed Tursonov at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center.

The Parisian then defeated the 28-year-old Tursonov 6-2 7-6 (11-9) courtesy of another second-set tie-break and will now face Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic in the last eight.

Tipsarevic was also required to take to the court twice, with world number 25 seeing off Michael Berrer of Germany 6-3 6-4 and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-2.

In an all-American third round clash, John Isner emerged victorious against James Blake in a hard-fought three-set contest which lasted two hours and 13 minutes.

The 26-year-old Isner recovered from winning just one game in the second set to eventually seal a 7-6 (7-0) 1-6 7-6 (7-4) win over former world number four Blake.

Isner's opponent will be third seed Viktor Troicki, a finalist at this event in 2008, who eliminated South Africa's Kevin Anderson with 6-3 6-3 success.

Spaniard Fernando Verdasco secured his spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-4 7-5 win over Nikolay Davydenko. The fifth seed's opponent in the last eight will be the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek, who defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-4 3-6 6-2.

The final quarterfinal tie will pit Cypriot fifth seed Marcos Baghdatis against American Donald Young, who has reached this stage of an ATP Tour competition for the first time.

Elsewhere, top seed Vera Zvonareva will take on Wimbledon semifinalist Sabine Lisicki in the quarterfinals of the WTA event in Carlsbad, California.

Zvonareva, who is currently third in the world rankings, earned a 6-3 6-0 victory over her fellow Russian Vera Dushevina, while Germany's Lisicki scored a 6-4 6-3 triumph over Coco Vandeweghe.

Number two seed Andrea Petkovic and American Sloane Stephens will meet after both of their opponents, Virginie Razzano and Tamira Paszek respectively, were forced to retire from their third round contests.

The last quarterfinal will see Slovakia's Daniela Hantuchova take on third seed Agnieszka Radwanksa.
