(CNN) -- American golfers Jeff Quinney and Tom Gainey both shot superb rounds of 63 as they took the lead after the first day of the Wyndham Championship.

Quinney spent much of the day leading the pack after hitting a hot streak of five consecutive birdies from the 12th onwards at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina whilst Gainey didn't drop a shot the entire round.

As the Wyndham Championship is the last PGA Tour event before the lucrative end-of-season FedExCup playoffs -- where only the top 125 golfers in the world will compete -- the race is on for the requisite points to appear.

And Quinney, who is looking for his first tour title, knows that anything less than victory won't be enough.

"The only chance I get in the playoffs is probably winning this week and coming with the attitude of ... basically just push all your chips in and this is what I got," Quinney told the PGA's official web site.

"It's my last chance."

Further down the leader board Irishman Padraig Harrington, South African Ernie Els and Englishman Paul Casey all made strong cases for their inclusion in the FedExCup.

Casey and Els both fired rounds of 65 to keep them two shots off the lead whilst Harrington's one under par 69 gives him hope going into the second round.

"I've got nothing to lose this week," Casey told the PGA's official web site.

"I believe I got to be top four to seal a place for next week."

In Europe Peter Lawrie tops the leader board at the Czech Open after shooting a six under par round of 66.

The Irishman, who finished runner up at the Prosper Golf Resort in Celadn last year, will hope to go one better after completing a near flawless first round.

"I had no bogeys, which always helps," Lawrie told the Associated Press.

"I played lovely, solid golf, and every chance I gave myself from short range, I holed it -- although I missed about a ten-footer at the last."

He holds a slender lead going into the second road with compatriot Damien McGrane, Victor Dubuisson of France and Spain's Pedro Oriol sitting just one shot behind after firing rounds of 67.

But Lawrie believes that he will avenge last year's failure when he lost in a three way play-off.

"The course is playing totally different this year to last year," he said.

"It's much softer. You're hitting your driver on pretty much every hole, and the ball's not running out in any shape or form."
