Leeds head coach Brian McDermott said referee Phil Bentham was right to award the extra time penalty that secured his side a Challenge Cup final place.

Kevin Sinfield kicked the goal to seal a 10-8 semi-final win over Castleford after Danny McGuire was caught by a high tackle by Tigers' Ryan McGoldrick.

"You can't go clocking blokes around the jaw," McDermott, whose side face Wigan at Wembley, told BBC Radio Leeds.

"It's wrong to say because it's last minute we won't give it."

McDermott added: "I feel for Castleford, I don't want to be arrogant or disregard their feelings as that is a tough way to go, but it was a penalty, I don't feel lucky."

In contrast, Tigers boss Terry Matterson was disappointed with the call, but was quick to praise his players for their efforts in a dramatic tie.

"I saw the replay and he hit him on the shoulder," said Matterson.

We probably deserve to be at Wembley but it's not always the team that deserves it that gets there

"We had six or seven high shots on us today, I think one got called, and to miss out on the dream because of a poor decision doesn't feel right.

"However I couldn't ask any more of the boys, they were wonderful.

"I can't be any prouder. We probably deserve to be at Wembley but it's not always the team that deserves it that gets there."

For Leeds, the success ensures a repeat of the equally dramatic Challenge Cup final of 1994, and also sends the Headingley club back to the national stadium for a second successive season after last year's defeat by Warrington.

"It feels fantastic after such a dramatic game. To be honest we're still in the fall out a bit, though it was a pretty buoyant dressing room after the game," McDermott continued.

"I'm proud to be part of this group of people as a lot is said about how fast and skilful these blokes are, but today it was about how tough they were.

"That will go down as one of the tightest, most dramatic semi-finals there has ever been."
